Elevate Your Classroom Presence: The Power of Style in Building Student Connections

There’s something special about math educators.
I know, I know, all educators are dope. But there is something about those of us who teach math that just hits different. We’re analytical and creative. We breathe numbers and build thinkers.
And whether we teach kindergarten math or AP Calculus, we are shaping how students see themselves far beyond the classroom.
I’m a math educator through and through.
Even though I’m not in the classroom anymore, my stats are still loud. My company’s impact is loud. And one thing that has never changed,
Students connect with who you are before they connect with what you teach.
My Style Was My Entry Point
When I was teaching, my outfits were legendary...well for my students at least.
The heels…always clicking.
The blazers…always sharp.
The whole look…signature.
What my students didn’t know was this. I wore blazers intentionally. I wanted to present myself in a way that felt polished, professional, and true to who I was… without pulling any attention away from the math we were there to learn.
But here’s what actually mattered -
My style broke the ice.
Students would compliment my fits, ask where I got my shoes, or tease me about being “too fancy” to teach. And that conversation, that tiny moment, gave me the window I needed:
A joke. A question. A chance to learn something about them.
That’s how relationships are built. Not in the big moments, but in the small ones.
Why What You Wear Matters More Than You Think
Fast forward to today.
Imagine walking into school wearing your DOPE MATH® Educator tee or cap. You’re not trying to make a statement…you’re just showing up as who you believe you are.
But your students? They’re definitely going to notice. I'm sure you can hear them now.
“Mr. Thomas… you think you a dope math educator?”
“Ms. G, that shirt is tough.”
“You really put ‘dope’ on your chest? You’re too much miss.”
Let's not forget, kids will humble you real quick…but that’s the point. They’re talking to you. They’re letting you know they see you. And all you have to do is talk back.
Crack a 'lil joke. Say thank you. Then follow it with, “You know what, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something.”
There’s your wedge. Your entryway. Your invitation to build connection and curiosity.
Looking Like a DOPE MATH® Educator Isn’t About Clothes
It’s about presence.
It’s about showing up in a way that feels like you…and gives your students a reason to come toward you instead of away from you.
Some teachers use sneakers. Some use stickers. Some use classroom décor.
I used blazers.
And now, you can use the DOPE MATH® Educator collection as your new entry point.
Not because it’s merch. Not because it’s fly - and is. But because it creates connection the moment you walk into the room.
When students feel safe talking to you, they feel safe learning from you.
And that’s what makes you dope.
If you’re ready to show up in a way that feels more intentional…more confident…more you, take a look at the DOPE MATH® Educator Collection. A small shift in how you show up can open big doors with your students.
